Ros's May greetings
I love this time of year in the Christian calendar. This month we are celebrating the Ascension of Jesus to heaven, followed by Pentecost when we remember the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon the early disciples. These two events were transforming situations in the lives of the disciples. May they have a similar effect on us as we take a fresh look at them this year and once again consider their importance.
Thy Kingdom Come
Once again, this year Christians are being encouraged to pray using the title ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. This year it is enhanced by material from Christian Aid which is also being celebrated at the same time, giving us an opportunity to pray on an even bigger scale!
We will be joining with people from the other two churches in the village in using this time for prayer. We will be hosting the first of the events on Ascension Day with an informal service setting the scene and encouraging us to pray. This will be followed by other events during the ten days, including a Big Breakfast event for Christian Aid. So please make an effort to be there for some of these activities.
There are also a number of resources that we are providing to help you during the 10 day period in praying for others. Please check them out and take the ones that you find helpful. We just want to encourage you to pray.
Last year my friend Jean and I carried it on when we went away and used one of the booklets each day that we were together. It made such a difference sharing our thoughts, which were often very different as we are different people who think in different ways and whose lives are in different situations. So often we approach Scripture as if there is only one interpretation and one application but we are individuals not clones and we can learn from each other as we journey together. Looking at the pictures in the books Jean would often spot things that I missed which would take her off in one direction whilst I would see different things which took me off in another direction. It was so good then to share together and explore our thoughts together. The same thing would happen with the Scripture readings. We made some new discoveries that expanded our understanding and challenged our preconceptions. This is important if we are going to grow as followers of Jesus.
We will have an opportunity to do this as we resume our Bible study this month. Why don’t you join us as together we explore the Bible, making new discoveries and applying what we read to our our lives.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; For thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen
It is important that we keep our focus on what God is saying and what God wants to do. We seem to have been waiting for something to happen for a long time. The period of preparation seems to go on and on. I’m having to learn a lot about waiting. I’ve now discovered that my operation is not likely to be before early July. This operation that I was told would be after Christmas has meant I haven’t felt able to make plans. Everything has been on hold as I’ve waited… and the waiting goes on.
But it hasn’t all been a waste of time, as it has given me some space to explore and rest with God, all part of the preparation for what comes next. Let’s continue to be open to what God is doing and his plans for our future together.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8))
